The Color Purple
Shug: More than anything God love admiration.Celie: You saying God is vain? Shug: No, not vain, just wanting to share a good thing. I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it. Celie: You saying it just wanna be loved like it say in the bible? Shug: Yeah, Celie. Everything wanna be loved. Us sing and dance, and holla just wanting to be loved. Look at them trees. Notice how the trees do everything people do to get attention... except walk?
Tre got me in the (beautiful) habit of finding miracles in nature, when we see something cool we take a picture of it and send it out with the caption, "God is truly something special." We've sent ants moving nuts, birds, squirrels, sunsets, anything we can find in nature when we stop to pay attention.
I was remembering a story that Oprah told about The Color Purple. She'd auditioned for the movie and was waiting for the callback but after a few weeks of anxiety she had given up hope and while walking she said to God, "I give up..." She remarked that in that moment she said it must not be for me, I have to let it go and that in that same moment she got a call from Spielberg offering her the role of Sofia.
I had made my peace with being unemployed for half the summer. I was okay with not going home, with staying here in SD with only one paycheck to last me 8 weeks. Then I got a phone call about a job possibility that is literally for the 8 weeks that I'd be unemployed. The only two words I had were, "...but GOD"!
I got my Spiritual Autobiography back from my professor today and it wasn't until I opened it to read that I began to think about the level of personal information inside the text. I am sure that none of my professors have ever received a more personal body of work from me, nor have I ever chosen to write so candidly and open my writing up for feedback and criticism. What I got back was just affirmation that this journey I am on is a good and important one. That in learning to let go and grow more gracious life is just getting better and more beautiful. It's like...when someone points out a pen clicking it becomes all you can hear; once you see the beauty and grace of the divine it is all you can see. Everything becomes the color purple.
I think that giving thanks and letting go ( I tell myself EVERYDAY "adopt the pace of nature, her secret is patience") has changed me, and I saw this thing that RuPaul said...something like if you want to change the world then change yourself.
And I got it. Isn't it funny the lessons that stay with you? Isn't it funny the teachers of those lessons are not great spiritual gurus yet still prophets of the word in their own right. Here is someone who is in touch with themSelves and because of that connection they can speak to you from that place straight to the part of you who needs to hear it.
Its beyond nature now, its not just ants, or birds, or fish, or a field of violet blossoms. It is in people too. Everyday angels, saints, and servants. I am beginning to see the color purple in us all. And really we're just like those trees...we dance we sing we laugh and we beg to be seen, to be heard. Acknowledge me. Its in everything we do. The god in us...begging for awe, perhaps. See me. Hear me. I am.
